Summary
In Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love, Mr. Anderson & Msgr. Chávez trace the history of Our Lady of Guadalupe from the sixteenth century to the present and discuss how her message was and continues to be an important catalyst for religious and cultural transformation. Looking at Our Lady of Guadalupe as a model of the Church and Juan Diego as a model for all Christians, the authors explore the changing face of the Catholic Church. They show how Our Lady of Guadalupe's message was not only historically significant, but how it speaks to contemporary issues confronting the American continents and people today.

More than 475 years ago, amidst the turmoil of colonization and a clash of cultures, a recent Indian convert Juan Diego Chuauhtlatoatzin appeared before the head of the church of Mexico, bishop-elect Juan de Zumárraga, with an important message. Juan Diego told the bishop-to-be that the Virgin Mary had appeared to him and that she had sent him to request the construction of a new chapel. While initially viewed with skepticism,
the story of this humble Indian messenger ultimately helped to shape the faith of an entire continent. Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of a Civilization of Love is a readable, though no less historically rigorous, consideration of the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and its significance for us today. In December of 1531, amidst the tumult of colonization and a clash of cultures, Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared three times to the Indian convert Juan Diego Chuauhtlatoatzin.
The Virgin Mary wanted a chapel built on the Tepeyac hill, just outside present-day Mexico City, and instructed Juan Diego to deliver her request to the head of the church of Mexico, the bishop-elect Juan de Zumárraga. As proof of her request, the Virgin entrusted Juan Diego with a bouquet of roses picked from the Tepeyac's wintery tundra. But when Juan Diego unfurled his tilma to reveal the Virgin's roses, a far greater miracle was uncovered.
Upon the rough surface of the tilma, Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted her own spectacular image. The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and her humble Indian messenger is more than 475-years-old, and yet today it continues to be a source of common devotion, unity and inspiration. Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love is a readable, though no less historically rigorous, consideration of the people and events surrounding the Guadalupan apparitions.
While placing the apparitions within the context of the 16th century Colonial world, this book also reflects on the contemporary significance of the Guadalupan story and its role in teaching us how to build a civilization of love.
